VC reaffirms management’s support for Home Economics Dept

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Department of Home Economics and Food Science, to ensure that its graduates meet international standards.

This assurance was given during a visit by the Home Economics Professionals Association of Nigeria (HEPAN) to the University. The visit was part of the preparations for the Association’s 14th national conference, which was hosted by the University of Ilorin’s Department of Home Economics.

Prof. Egbewole, who has represented during the visit by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, appreciated the HEPAN National Executive Committee for choosing the University of Ilorin to host the Conference, noting that events like that would encourage students to pursue their chosen career paths with renewed vigour.

While recounting some of the support that his administration has rendered to the Department of Home Economics, the Vice Chancellor told the HEPAN Executive Committee members that a state-of-the-art building being constructed for the Department will soon be commissioned and made available for use.

Earlier in her remarks, the President of HEPAN, Prof. Nkiru Meludu, expressed the Association’s appreciation to the Vice Chancellor and his management team for their support for the Department of Home Economics and Food Science.

While lamenting that the name “Home Economics” often leads to a narrow perception, with many believing that the field is limited to cooking and sewing, despite its wider applications, the HEPAN President said that the field has a broad scope. He noted that it encompasses various disciplines, including Medicine, Engineering, and Pharmacy, among others.

She also underscored the Association’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness across the country about the true nature of the discipline, while also networking and showcasing research outcomes.

Prof. Meludu appreciated the greenery of the University of Ilorin environment. She also commended the University’s Researchers’ Lodge, and described the facility as beautiful and conducive for academic work, which further strengthens the institution’s reputation as a centre for research and innovation.
