The Federal Government has appointed a former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Nike Yetunde Sidikat Ijaiya, into the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy.
The renowned academic and administrator would work with 11 other members selected from across the country on the Committee headed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN.
The Committee, which is tasked with the responsibility of recommending individuals eligible for pardons from criminal convictions, was inaugurated penultimate Wednesday (January 15, 2025).
Other members of the Committee include the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties and Governmental Affairs, representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Correctional Service, National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Also included on the Committee are Justice Augustine Utsaha, Prof. Alkasum Abba, Chief Akinlolu Olujinmi (SAN), and the Director for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, who will serve as the Committee’s Secretary.
Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, commended the Federal Government on Prof. Ijaiya’s appointment, which he said was well-deserved.
Prof. Egbewole, in a statement issued by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, said that the appointment of the former Deputy Vice Chancellor, who is also the first female Professor from Kwara State, is a honour to the University.
The Vice Chancellor noted that Prof. Ijaiya possesses relevant skills that would enable her to discharge her responsibilities to the fullest.
He expressed conviction that the retired Professor of Educational Management would work earnestly with other members to achieve the objectives of the Committee.
Meanwhile, the Offa Descendants Union (ODU), under the leadership of Alhaji Olaniyi Muyideen Azeez Salako, has congratulated Prof. Ijaiya on her appointment.
In a statement issued by its National PRO, Mr Taofeek Olalekan Olaosebikan, the Union wished the retired Professor of Educational Management great success in her new national assignment.
