UNILORIN don, Bamidele shines in AI Research contest

In a remarkable recognition of excellence in the field of Artificial Intelligence, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, University of Ilorin, Dr Awotunde Joseph Bamidele, has won the Third position in the University Category of the Best AI Researcher in Higher Education in the country.

The award was presented during the AI Awareness Day ceremony held virtually on February 17, 2025

                The National Coordinator of the Awards Selection Committee for the 2025 AI Awareness Day in Higher Education, Prof. Peter Okebukola, highlighted Dr Bamidele’s outstanding contributions to shaping AI policies in higher education in the country. His entry was noted for its excellence and significant impact, ultimately securing him a commendable third place among numerous submissions.

Prof. Okebukola said that Dr. Bamidele’s work had been pivotal in influencing how Artificial Intelligence is integrated into educational frameworks across Nigerian universities. His research addresses not only theoretical aspects but also practical applications that enhance learning experiences and administrative efficiencies.

The awards ceremony was made possible through sponsorship from several organisations, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the National Association of Artificial Intelligence Practitioners (NAAIP), and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), among others. Their support underscores a collective commitment to promoting research and innovation in higher education.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to evolve rapidly, its implications for education are becoming increasingly significant.

Dr Bamidele’s engagement extends beyond the academia; he actively participates in community outreach programmes aimed at raising awareness about AI technologies and their benefits. His efforts contribute to demystifying AI for students and educators alike, fostering a culture of innovation within local communities.

In a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office, Dr Bamidele expressed his commitment to furthering his research endeavours while collaborating with other scholars and institutions both locally and internationally.

He said, “I aim to continue advocating for policies that support sustainable development through technology in education. This recognition serves as an inspiration not only for me but also for aspiring researchers across Nigeria who wish to make impactful contributions to their fields. The award highlights the importance of dedication and innovation in advancing knowledge and practice within higher education.”
