The Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, has called on the federal government and other stakeholders to swiftly halt the challenge of brain drain facing the country, particularly the nation’s university system.
Mr Alfanla made the call penultimate Saturday (December 7, 2024) while featuring on a radio programme in Ilorin, which was monitored by UNILORIN Bulletin.
The Registrar expressed dissatisfaction with the prevalence of brain drain across public institutions in the country and urged the government and relevant stakeholders to look for a way to swiftly stem the ugly tide.
He said that the rate at which people abandon their work and families to go elsewhere in search of greener pastures is scary.
The Registrar pointed out that the challenge does not only affect the University of Ilorin but also all the nation’s universities.
Mr Alfanla urged university teachers and other professionals to be patient, saying that we all need to sacrifice for Nigeria before the country can get back on the right track.
He added that our professionals needed to remain at home in order to contribute their quotas to its transformation as he said that those who travel out are going to develop their host counties at the expense of theirs.
Speaking on the uninterrupted academic calendar of the University, Mr Alfanla said that the prevailing peace of the University is informed by the progressive administrative dispositions of its successive managers.
He added that as a way of promoting staff welfare, the University introduced some measures in the form of incentives such as 25% waiver for school charges payable by staff’s biological children as well as training and retraining at local and international levels.
He also said that the University authorities also engaged in consistent positive interactions with the leadership of trade unions in order to ensure that the unions are always carried along decision making process.
Mr Alfanla urged the federal government to streamline the number of agencies charged with the responsibility of oversighting the finances of public universities in the country.
He explained that having different government establishments performing the same function is retrogressive and could cause inconsistencies in their findings.
He, therefore, advocated the setting up of a centralised body for that function to stave off the inconsistencies that often arise due to divergent positions of the agencies.
