IEDPU endows prize for UNILORIN best graduating student

The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), the umbrella socio-cultural organisation of the people of Ilorin Emirate, has endowed an annual prize to be awarded to the best graduating student of the University of Ilorin, the nation’s most sought-after University.

In putting effect to this, the Union last Tuesday (March 11, 2025) credited a designated account of the University with the sum of N2, 000, 000.

Speaking to UNILORIN Bulletin on the development, the National President of the Union, Alhaji Abdulmumini Ayo Abdulmalik, explained that the prize is one of the ways by which the Union intends to continuously impact the University.

The IEDPU President recalled that he had, at a meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN,in January, promised that the Union would sponsor an annual award in the University.

Alhaji Abdulmalik said that the prize is intended to support the developmental initiatives of the Egbewole Administration in the University.

The community leader, who is also an alumnus of the University and a retired Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, added that sponsorship of the award is equally targeted at encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence among students of the University as well as cementing the good relationship between the University and its host community.

Alhaji Abdulmalik promised to encourage members and friends of the Union to also support the University in one way or the other for the benefit of humanity.

Reacting to the gesture, the Vice Chancellor thanked IEDPU for redeeming its pledge.

The Vice Chancellor, who spoke through the University Spokesman, Mr Kunle Akogun, said that the entire management, staff and students of the University are delighted that the Union decided to sponsor an annual prize in the University.

Prof. Egbewole encouraged similar organisations within and outside the host community to support the University, saying that such dispositions would stimulate the achievement of the University’s corporate objectives.
