The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commended the University of Ilorin for maintaining its reputation as a distinguished institution recognised for its high moral values and academic excellence.
The commendation was given by the Director of Procurement at the NYSC Headquarters, Abuja, Mr Jimba Olawole, when he visited the Vice-Chancellor of the University last Monday (March 17, 2025) ahead of his participation in a sensitisation programme organised for prospective corps members from the institution.
Mr Olawole, who once served as the Kwara State Coordinator of NYSC, appreciated the commitment of the University to excellence and acknowledged that its graduates have consistently demonstrated outstanding qualities. He also applauded the successive administrations and staff of the University for sustaining high standards over the years.
The Director reaffirmed the dedication of the NYSC to guiding and preparing prospective corps members for their service year.
Mr Olawole explained that the visit was scheduled in anticipation of the upcoming orientation programme for new corps members next month, adding that the goal of the sensitisation programme was to provide useful guidance to the students.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, reaffirmed the dedication of the University to its students, who he referred to as children under the care of the institution.
Prof. Egbewole, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, conveyed his gratitude for the efforts of the NYSC in taking care of UNILORIN graduates during their mandatory one-year service.
While acknowledging the challenges that sometimes arise in meeting expectations, the Vice Chancellor noted that many students exhibit a strong sense of adventure, likely stemming from their upbringing in a structured and protective environment. This sense of adventure, according to Prof. Egbewole, fuels the eagerness of the students to explore new experiences.
Expressing optimism about the impact of the visit, the Vice Chancellor said that it would provide students with valuable insights and equip them with the necessary knowledge to prioritise their preparations for the service year.
In his own remarks, the University Registrar, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, expressed appreciation to Mr. Olawole for the assistance he had rendered to the University in the past, particularly during his tenure as the Kwara State Coordinator of NYSC.
The Registrar narrated instances where Mr Olawole responded positively to concessional requests made to the scheme, demonstrating his willingness to assist the institution. He also recalled a specific incident when one of the University’s graduates encountered a challenge at the NYSC camp, adding that the University contacted Mr Olawole, who handled the situation excellently and ensured a smooth resolution.
On his part, the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Akanmu, commended the NYSC team lead, recalling that he was the Sub-Dean of Student Affairs when the incident mentioned by the Registrar occurred.
Dr Akanmu noted Mr Olawole’s efforts in resolving the challenge to ensure that the affected graduate successfully completed his service, He said, “Today, that our graduate is doing well, and his success is attributed to the timely assistance provided by Mr Olawole and the University”.
The Dean, who appreciated Mr Olawole for acknowledging the discipline and good conduct of students from the University of Ilorin, reaffirmed the commitment of the University to upholding its culture of discipline and excellence, assuring that the University would continue to make the nation proud.
The Vice Chancellor was joined to receive the team by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye; the Sub Deans of Student Affairs, Dr Oludolapo Ojediran, Dr. Mohammed Kabir Garba and Dr A. O. Oyabambi, as well as the President of the Student Union, Mr Victor Oghenetega Agezeh.
Other members of the NYSC team were Mr Kayode Adekanye and Mr Awolowo Babatunde.
