RUDN University, Faculty of CIS collaborate on training workshop

The RUDN University, Moscow, has organised a training workshop for students and staff of the University of Ilorin to boost their academic learning, research, and community service.

               The programme, organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, aimed at equipping participants with essential skills in academic research, manuscript writing, and publication ethics.

The two-day training workshop held at the Auditorium Basement last Monday and Tuesday (March 17-18, 2025). with sessions covering key topics such as structuring research papers, avoiding plagiarism, and navigating high-impact journal submissions.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Prof. Lukman Azeez, emphasised the importance of strong academic writing skills in advancing research output and global academic recognition.

Prof. Azeez noted that the training would assist postgraduate students of the University in understanding the rules and regulations guiding academic research writing, as it is now mandatory for Master’s students to publish at least one article before graduation.

The Dean expressed gratitude to RUDN University for the collaboration and reiterated the commitment of the Faculty to fostering research excellence. He encouraged participants to apply the skills learned to improve their academic work and contribute to global scholarship.

Speaking on behalf of RUDN University, Prof. Muhammad Jamiu Mustapha, highlighted the institution’s dedication to international partnerships that promote knowledge exchange.

He added that “the collaboration between RUDN University and the CIS Faculty marks a significant step in strengthening research capacity and academic excellence within the institutions.”

The first day of the training featured Prof. Mustapha discussing publishing in high-index journals, review work, editing, and essential guidelines. Prof. Gregory Simon from Russia joined via Zoom to explain understanding the industry and what works in each country regarding academic research writing.

Prof. Saudat Abdulbaqi of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, discussed ‘Writing for Journals’. She emphasised the importance of maintaining attention to detail throughout the writing and submission process to increase the chances of being accepted by the journal.

Prof. Abdulbaqi encouraged young researchers to persevere, restrategise, and not give up if their paper is rejected.

On his part, Dr Rasaq Adisa of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin discussed qualitative data management, coding, and analysis using NVivo and AI. He explained how students and researchers can utilize different available Artificial Intelligence tools for data analysis based on their field of study.

Dr Adisa noted that “technology has made research writing easy, however, students should use it wisely.”
