The Student Union of the University of Ilorin has presented some specially designed souvenirs to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, as part of its contribution to the forthcoming golden jubilee celebration of the Institution.
The leadership of the Union, accompanied by the Ag Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Akanmu, presented the souvenirs to the Vice Chancellor last Tuesday (April 8, 2025), during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor.
In his remarks after receiving the souvenirs, Prof. Egbewole appreciated the Student Union for blazing the trail, noting that they are the first stakeholder to officially make a donation towards the 50th anniversary of the University. He described the gesture as a mark of responsible and visionary student leadership.
The Vice Chancellor further praised the Union for taking the initiative, adding that, “they have shown what it means to be responsive and responsible leaders. As the first stakeholder to present a commemorative item for the 50th anniversary, they have set a worthy example for others to follow”.
Prof. Egbewole expressed optimism that the Student Union would continue to lead by example, helping to blaze the trail in efforts to reposition the University for greater achievements.
Speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin, the President of the Student’ Union, Mr Victor Oghenetega Agezeh, reiterated the commitment of the student body to positioning students as key stakeholders in the life of the University.
Mr Agezeh noted that the present Executive Committee of the Student Union is determined to leave a legacy of meaningful contributions ahead of its exit from office. He noted that although the current Student Union leadership will complete its tenure before the official 50th anniversary celebration in November, they are proud to have initiated a symbolic gesture that sets the tone for student involvement in the milestone event.
Also speaking with the UNIORIN Bulletin, the Ag Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Akanmu, commended the Student Union for its proactive contributions towards the University’s 50th anniversary, describing the Union’s initiative as a demonstration of responsible leadership.
Dr Akanmu praised the current Union leadership for taking the initiative to be part of the golden jubilee festivities.
While speaking on the reason why the Student Union leadership took the initiative, the Ag Dean of Student Affairs said, “It is quite commendable that despite knowing they will not be in office when the University celebrates the milestone, they chose to do something significant to register their participation and ensure that students are visibly represented in this historic moment.”
Dr Akanmu further expressed hope that the upcoming anniversary would not only be memorable but would also inspire deeper unity and collaboration across the University community. He encouraged other student leaders, past and present, to take a cue from the gesture and remain committed to the advancement of the University of Ilorin.
