UNILORIN Alumni Spotlight is on Mariam Motunrayo Shiru (née Yinusa) – Class of 2014!

Born into the Eletu family in Ilorin, Dr. Mariam Motunrayo Shiru (née Yinusa) is a proud alumna of the University of Ilorin, having attended University School, Unilorin Secondary School, and the University of Ilorin.

She graduated at the top of her class in 2014, earning several prestigious awards, including University Scholar, Best Graduating Student in Surgery, Neuropsychiatry, Distinction in Clinical Biochemistry, Best in First Professional MBBS Exam, and Overall Best Graduating Student of the 2014 University of Ilorin Medical Graduands.

Mariam proceeded to specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, driven by her passion to contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality from preventable causes. She is a member of the Preterm Birth International Collaborative (PREBIC), a not-for-profit research and education organisation that aims to reduce the incidence and deaths of babies born prematurely.

Her outstanding efforts were recognised by the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, awarding her Best Student in the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2021, after passing her exams at the first attempt. Additionally, Mariam was awarded Best Candidate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the 2021 Membership Examinations by the West African College of Surgeons.

Mariam is an Associate Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and a Member of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS). She is actively involved in the welfare of fellow resident doctors, having held offices and served on various committees in the Association of Resident Doctors, UITH. Notably, she is the first female elected President of the Association.

Outside of her medical pursuits, Mariam enjoys exploring new places and indulging in good food.
