UNILORIN produces 30 new vet doctors

Thirty new veterinary doctors were last Monday (October 7, 2024) inducted into the veterinary profession, following the completion of their training at the University of Ilorin. The new veterinary doctors, who are graduands of the class of 2023 set of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, took their oath at the University Auditorium during the 6th induction and oath-taking ceremony for the 2022/2023 graduating class.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, urged the inductees to see what they can do to make Nigeria a better country. Prof. Egbewole reminded the new veterinary doctors that their learning journey had only just begun, stressing that the profession requires continuous education and self-improvement, which should be a priority to them throughout their careers.

In her welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Oyebisi Azeez, advised the inductees to uphold the noble standards of the profession. Prof. Azeez reminded them that many aspired to be addressed with the title of “doctor,” as he urged them to maintain the integrity and professionalism expected of them. The Dean stressed the importance of recognising limitations and cautioned the inductees that true professionals understand when to seek guidance, saying that this would distinguish them from those who prioritise titles over skills.

In her speech, the Keynote Speaker at the event, Dr Puspa Ramloo, advised the new veterinary doctors to follow their passion. She explained that the inductees shouldn’t limit themselves but should pursue whatever they want in life. Dr Ramloo also encouraged the new veterinary doctors to always do the right thing and always learn to render services to humanity.

The President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Mrs Aishatu Abubakar-Baju, encouraged the inductees to compete with themselves. She noted that they are not in competition with anyone and should strive to be better persons everyday. The VCN President advised the inductees not to be distracted and avoid anything that would bring bad name to the profession. Highlights of the event included the presentation of awards to some guests and best graduating students in each Department.

Among the guests at the event were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Suleiman Folorunsho Ambali; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole; the Ag.
