You are doing well, VC tells UNILORIN @ 50 Committee

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended the pace of work already covered by the Planning Committee for the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the University.

Prof. Egbewole gave this commendation last Tuesday (February 25, 2025) during a meeting between the University Management and members of the Committee in his office.

The Vice Chancellor said that he was impressed by the commitment and industry being demonstrated by the Chairman, Prof. Olugbenga Ayodeji Mokuolu, and members of the Committee.

Prof. Egbewole, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), noted that from the presentation of the Committee Chairman, he was convinced that the Committee was doing “a wonderful job”.

He added that the Committee had obviously put a wonderful process in place and that a lot of work had been going on towards making the anniversary truly remarkable.

Prof. Egbewole, however, urged the Committee to swiftly bridge the gap between the laid down process and the envisaged project.

He specifically encouraged the Committee to up the scale in fund raising by ensuring that the much needed “nuisance value” is created for every stakeholder to see the need to be part of the anniversary celebration.

The Vice Chancellor added that meaningful noises must be made at strategic periods and points as he charged the Committee to consider the possibility of appointing strategic partners for every aspect of the anniversary.

He hinted that the University Administration would in March, 2025 appoint 50 UNILORIN ambassadors to stimulate more interest of relevant stakeholders not only on the anniversary but also on the University at large.

Prof. Egbewole, who led other Management staff in pointing out areas for improvement, urged the Committee to ensure a marked departure from what was done during the previous anniversary celebrations of the University, as he also encouraged it to engage in the qualitative comparison of what older universities did during similar outings for the University of Ilorin to do much better.

Briefing the University Management earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Mokuolu summarised its activities since its inauguration.

Prof. Mokuolu explained that the Committee had been broken down into different sub-committees for ease of operations.

While noting the significance of adequate funding in the discharge of the Committee’s duties, the Chairman explained that various sources of funding have been identified and would be purposively pursued.

He thanked the Vice Chancellor and members of the University Management team for their cooperation and suggestions as he assured the Management that the Committee would look into all the suggestions for implementation.

Prof. Mokuolu specifically assured the Management that the Committee would scale up its activities for the anniversary to be a truly memorable one.

An alumnus of the University’s College of Health Sciences, Dr Niyi Oshamiluyi, who spoke with the Vice Chancellor on the phone in the course of the meeting,  promised to assist the University with the construction of a platform that would make financial contributions by alumni and other friends of the University from different parts of the world and in different currencies easy.

Dr Oshamiluyi, who appreciated the Vice Chancellor for keeping the flag of the University flying, assured him that everything worth doing would be done by him to ensure that the anniversary is successfully held.
